The ethical -ness of it is redundant but here is what it essentially looks like. Normal algebra: 38+x=120. subtract 38 from both sides, and x=82. This way, 38+x=120. split 120 into two parts, giving the first part of 120 1 greater than half of 120, and the second 1 less than half of 120. then follow 1=part1-the first term+part2. so, 61-38+59=82. understood?
